Given the frequency of diplomatic exchanges between the Caliphate of Córdoba, the Ottonian sovereigns and Byzantium in the middle of the tenth century, several significant gifts are reported by the sources. Considering some specific cases of these gifts in the light of recent historiographical methodologies developed in relation to the process of gift giving within diplomatic relations in the Early Middle Ages – particularly that theorised by the Arabist Oleg Grabar proposing the existence of a shared culture of objects between Byzantium and the Islamic caliphates – I will try to understand whether these methodologies are still valid in such a complicated context and how important were these gifts for the recipient courts in the construction of their imperial/caliphal authority.

Abstract
Given the frequency of diplomatic exchanges between the Caliphate of Córdoba, the Ottonian sovereigns and Byzantium in the middle of the tenth century, several significant gifts are reported by the sources. Considering some specific cases of these gifts in the light of recent historiographical methodologies developed in relation to the process of gift giving within diplomatic relations in the Early Middle Ages – particularly that theorised by the Arabist Oleg Grabar proposing the existence of a shared culture of objects between Byzantium and the Islamic caliphates – I will try to understand whether these methodologies are still valid in such a complicated context and how important were these gifts for the recipient courts in the construction of their imperial/caliphal authority.Pubblicazioni consigliate
