The monumental cemetery ′Foce′ in Sanremo, located near the shore, was founded in 1838, and now counts over 2000 tombs. It also conserves many evidences of the Sanremo’s Belle Epoque (1880-1915), period in which the city became an important international tourist destination. Unfortunately, the site is in a state of strong decay. Sustainability is closely linked with the modern concept of conservation as a continuous and long term process. The major problems of the site are the lacking of heirs and of a specialized local direction, the infesting plants and the absence of a plan about weed control. The central part of this work will focus on the biological species present and the specific critical issues about them. First of all many specimens of Cupressus sempervivens present the disease so-called ′Cupressus’s canker′. The solving of the removal of infesting plants is not immediate because in some cases there is a strong contrast due to a coexistence of the interests both of conservation of artifacts and of vegetation. So we have manage to give the most sustainable solution, trying to maintain the same green areas. Afterwards it will presented a plan and the possibility of a solution economically sustainable after the major restoration. At the end, we propound solutions for a sustainable management and valorization considering the cemetery characteristics. These solutions will have a minimal economic and environmental impact.
