The author presents the debate concerning the value and usefulness of the notion of “dignity” in ethics as well as the position of Demetrio Neri on the issue. In dialogue with him, the author presents the conception of “dignity” as a notion capable of overcoming the abstract character of both conservative and liberal contemporary ethical theories. Dignity is also adequate in clinical ethics since it can be applied to safeguard a single patient in a specifc situation.
