Ca’ Foscari and Italian colonialism From its foundation, Ca’ Foscari met the needs of a local and national elite that was ready to fit into the new economic and commercial balance taking shape in the late nineteenth century. Initially with the conquest of the first colonies and then with the construction of the Italian Empire, the academic staffing plan and the courses offered at the Venetian university were frequently changed in order to fashion a class of commercial officials that could extend Italian economic influen- ce throughout the Mediterranean basin.
