This is the Power Point presentation of the key note speech delivered at the IUFRO Conference on "The social and ecological value added of small scale forestry to the bioeconomy" held in Bolzano, Italy, on the 7-8 October 2020. The presentation introduces current mega trends, and explore them as challenges for small-scale forestry in adopting and supporting different types of innovation. Technological innovation is currently dominant in the European context for forest-based bioeconomy, while social innovation is emerging as possible complementary promising approach. Small-scale forestry has to find ways for integrating these two approaches, taking into consideration the new EU policies on Green Deal, Biodiversity Strategy and other policy interventions which are going to shape our future.
