The essay deals with the problems of the manuscript tradition of the Digest and the method chosen by Mommsen to overcome them for his critical edition. Particular attention is dedicated to the medieval manuscripts of the Digest (the so-called Vulgata) and to the importance that Mommsen gave to them. The last part of the paper focuses on the limits of the editorial procedures applied by Mommsen, indicated by later scholars, in order to find new paths for further researches.
