The history of Modern Greek studies in Italy, although limited to the second half of the Nineteenth century, is undoubtedly difficult to deal with, especially in the absence of systematic research on many aspects pertaining to the topic. The main purpose of this contribution is therefore to isolate moments and figures that in this long period contributed to the formation of an increasingly focused and specific interest in Neo-Hellenism; an interest that, abandoning the ideological, political and cultural implications that allowed it to flourish, became a subject of study, even be- fore the official inclusion of Modern Greek studies in the Italian university.

Abstract

The history of Modern Greek studies in Italy, although limited to the second half of the Nineteenth century, is undoubtedly difficult to deal with, especially in the absence of systematic research on many aspects pertaining to the topic. The main purpose of this contribution is therefore to isolate moments and figures that in this long period contributed to the formation of an increasingly focused and specific interest in Neo-Hellenism; an interest that, abandoning the ideological, political and cultural implications that allowed it to flourish, became a subject of study, even be- fore the official inclusion of Modern Greek studies in the Italian university.
