The article focuses on a bronze coin hoard found in the Late Roman shipwreck discovered at Le Scole (Isola del Giglio). The hoard, which originally was probably composed of about 500 pieces, consists today of only 84 specimens; most of these date back to the 4th century AD, until the 80s. The nucleus includes also some particular pieces, such as a dupondium of Marcus Aurelius and two bronze coins of the Bosporan Kingdom. These ‘unusual’ presences are not infrequent in Late Roman hoards of bronze coins and the two examples from the Bosporus perhaps clarify the origin of the hoard itself. The chronology of the issues in the hoard seems to define the possible moment of the sinking more accurately than the amphorae which were found there.
