Faecal immunochemical tests (FIT) are among the most commonly used tests in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programmes worldwide. However, no randomised controlled trials have been carried out evaluating the impact of FIT-based screening programmes on CRC incidence and mortality rates. The experience of Italian FIT-based screening programmes is one of the most widespread and well established worldwide. This paper reports the main results of the 2018 survey of Italian CRC screening programmes, which was carried out by the National Centre for Screening Monitoring (Osservatorio Nazionale Screening) on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Health. The paper also reviews the evidence on the impact of FIT-based screening on CRC incidence, tumor stage at diagnosis, mortality and surgery rates, which derive from routine programmes in Italy.
