The paper offers an overview of the measures adopted by the EU Commission, to face the outcomes of Fukushima nuclear meltdown. Through Regulation (EU) 297/2011, the Institution imposed special conditions on the import of food and feed originating in or consigned from Japan.Such measures – ensuring food safety by means of random official controls on imported goods - have been enforced on the legal basis of article 53 of Regulation (EC) 178/2002, that charges the Commission with the implementation of actions, when a risk for public health, animal health or for the environment cannot be adequately contained by the interested Member State, individually. Since the emergency concerns food safety, in relation to a nuclear accident, both the RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) and the ECURIE (European Union’s Urgent Radiological Information Exchange System) have been put on the alert: the Commission will be informed regularly thanks to the coordination and efficiency of the members of the two networks.
