This article reflects on the opportunities and obstacles that women face in peace operations considering that more than twenty years and nine subsequent resolutions have passed since the adoption of the landmark UNSCR 1325 in 2000, which introduced the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. Further, looking also at the still ongoing outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has brought new challenges but also the potential to “build back better”, this paper argues that it is time to review where we have arrived so far along this journey towards the equal and full participation of women in peace and security processes and where we are actually leading.

Abstract

This article reflects on the opportunities and obstacles that women face in peace operations considering that more than twenty years and nine subsequent resolutions have passed since the adoption of the landmark UNSCR 1325 in 2000, which introduced the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. Further, looking also at the still ongoing outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has brought new challenges but also the potential to “build back better”, this paper argues that it is time to review where we have arrived so far along this journey towards the equal and full participation of women in peace and security processes and where we are actually leading.
