This essay aims at tackling the picture of the Spanish Postwar period as it can be inferred from Carmen Laforet's short-length production, mainly published in the Fifties and, being commissioned literature, peculiarly characterized by a short and compressed elaboration. Through an analysis of her seven short novels and several short stories, the focus of the study developed here is the appreciation of the colorful plasticity through which Laforet manages to portray a variably traumatized society, in a context of capillary control and censorship upon culture, and thorough suppression of any anti-triumphalist point of view.

Abstract

This essay aims at tackling the picture of the Spanish Postwar period as it can be inferred from Carmen Laforet's short-length production, mainly published in the Fifties and, being commissioned literature, peculiarly characterized by a short and compressed elaboration. Through an analysis of her seven short novels and several short stories, the focus of the study developed here is the appreciation of the colorful plasticity through which Laforet manages to portray a variably traumatized society, in a context of capillary control and censorship upon culture, and thorough suppression of any anti-triumphalist point of view.
