Turkey has formally withdrawn from a landmark international treaty protecting women from violence: the Council of Europe (CoE) Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. The paper aims at analyzing how Turkey’s withdrawal from this treaty will affect the EU’s relations, particularly in EU countries not willing to ratify the Istanbul convention (Latvia, Lithuania, Slovak Republic, Czech Republic, Hungary), and how to protect women’s rights in the international human rights system. The case law in which Turkey is involved before the European Court of Human Rights for violations of the ECHR against women is specifically analyzed as a good premise to protect women’s rights in countries where the Istanbul Convention is not in force.
