After some general remarks on the role of Campanian landscape in the poetic oeuvre of Paulinus of Nola, this paper focuses on the description of the Irpinian Apennines contained in the Natalicium 13 (= carm. 21 Hartel), composed for the celebration of the whose inhabitants had taken charge of repairing the aqueduct that supplied the sanctuary of St. Felix, and rises a long invective against Nolans, who arrogantly refused to provide water from their own supply. As already noted by Leofranc A. Holford-Strevens, Paulinus' polemic reflects a biographical anecdote concerning Vergil, who was said to have expunged Nola's name from georg. 2, 225 because its citizens refused his request for water ; building on this acquisition, I suggest not only to identify with the voice of Vergil the ueteris uox querelae which Paulinus echoes in his poem, but also to interpret his willingness to celebrate the name of Avella as a reaction to the Late Antique exegesis of Aen. 7, 740.

Abstract
7, 740.Pubblicazioni consigliate
