LA VOZ, EL CUERPO, LAS PASIONES: LUIGI LOMBARDI SATRIANI Y NATUZZA EVOLO

This writing is an exercise in memory dedicated to Luigi Lombardi Satriani (San Costan-tino di Briatico, 1936-Rome, 2022) and his position as “anthropologist at home” in the ethnographic researchs on south Italian folklore. The near sight-far sight dialectic runs through the history of the anthropological gaze directed at the construction of the object of research and the configuration of ethnographic knowledge. The case of Natuzza Evolo, from Paravati, a small town in Calabria, is one of the most representative ethnographic investigations of the recently deceased anthropologist’s work on the ideology of death in the folk culture of southern Italy. Natuzza experienced phenomena of possession trance thus becoming medium of dialogues between the living and the dead. Lombardi Satriani grew up in a little town nearby at the same epoch when the woman was going to attract pilgrimes from the neighborhood. The article intends to thematize the “near sight” on this case, as a possible key for critical reflection on Lombardi Satriani’s fieldwork model and his fundamental role in post-demartiniana Italian anthropology.
