The arrival in Chile of the 1767 decree issued by Charles III expelling the Jesuits from Spanish territories is analyzed through a text written by an anonymous author, himself probably a Jesuit. This text, composed of a lament and an epitaph, narrates the Jesuits’ pain and sorrow stemming from their feeling of injustice and the incommensurability of the experience of exile. The document expresses an apology of the Jesuits’ history, a metaphoric manifestation of pain, and fear concerning the future. This anonymous text bids farewell to their specific place in the world; but it also stands as an imprint-monument of the Jesuits’ historical transit through Chile, as it likewise refers to their secular tradition in the Catholic orb.

Abstract
The arrival in Chile of the 1767 decree issued by Charles III expelling the Jesuits from Spanish territories is analyzed through a text written by an anonymous author, himself probably a Jesuit. This text, composed of a lament and an epitaph, narrates the Jesuits’ pain and sorrow stemming from their feeling of injustice and the incommensurability of the experience of exile. The document expresses an apology of the Jesuits’ history, a metaphoric manifestation of pain, and fear concerning the future. This anonymous text bids farewell to their specific place in the world; but it also stands as an imprint-monument of the Jesuits’ historical transit through Chile, as it likewise refers to their secular tradition in the Catholic orb.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
