On 8 March 2020, one day before the beginning of the period of national lockdown settled to deal with the pandemic emergency from Covid-19, some episodes of revolt took place in numerous Italian prisons. In particular, the Sant'Anna prison in Modena jumped at the center of the news for different reasons: the intensity of the protests, the damage to the building (made almost completely unusable) and ? most of all - the tragic epilogue of the events: indeed, 9 of Modena?s inmates died following the riots (5 in the institute, 4 after an immediate transfer to another prison). This article aims to retrace and describe the events that occurred in the light of the previous characteristics of Sant?Anna and to critically discuss the mediatic discourse which covered the events. This is done hinging on some findings deriving from the activities of the Observatory on prison conditions of the Associazione Antigone.
