This study examines sonnet 738 of Tasso's Rime where the author portrays himself as a chastised Phaethon. This mythological reference may be interpreted within the Ferrara literary tradition which includes sonnet 116, Ben divino, by Giovan Battista Pigna. A detailed comparative analysis demonstrates that Pigna's text functioned as Tasso's direct model. The hypothesis is reinforced by the proven relationship between the two poets.
