Abstract

Majority of the bridge collapses are due to hydraulic reasons. The Italian technical standards of constructions (NTC 2018) provide few indications about the design and verification criteria of bridges with respect to river processes. In the last year, a working group on the "Hydraulic Compatibility of Bridges" (sites.google.com/view/gii-ponti) was set up, with the aim of formulating proposals for good practices and guide-lines for assessing hydraulic compatibility of bridges, as a basis for both bridge safety and flood risk analysis. The working subgroup on "Hydraulic Hazard" aims to assess the methodology for hydraulic modelling with respect to bridge vulnerability analysis. The main goal is to produce practical guidelines to carry out a proper assessment of hydraulics at riverine bridges. The topic is of critical importance, as floods are one of the most frequent causes of bridge failure, and complex, due to the peculiarities of each single case study, to the number of processes involved in bridge hydrodynamics, and to the wealth of tools available nowadays. In this contribution, we first present a general overview of modelling needs and modelling approaches, highlighting the data requirement and the key issues for a proper modelling analysis. This study includes practical applications to three case studies show the potential of two- and three-dimensional hydrodynamic models.
