The paper offers some preliminary observations on the consular elections of the years 77, 76, and 75 BC. The 70s BC were neither a period of dominion of the ‘Sullan faction’ nor of dismantlement of the Sullan constitution, but a time when the Roman society tried to deal with the different factors of social instability that were the legacy not only of the Sullan regime, but also of previous civil conflicts, and strove to maintain peace. The careers and characteristics of the consuls elected between 77 and 75 show that the majority of the voting population chose them as they were thought to be able to put an end to the violence of previous years and tackle the issues threatening stability.

Abstract
The paper offers some preliminary observations on the consular elections of the years 77, 76, and 75 BC. The 70s BC were neither a period of dominion of the ‘Sullan faction’ nor of dismantlement of the Sullan constitution, but a time when the Roman society tried to deal with the different factors of social instability that were the legacy not only of the Sullan regime, but also of previous civil conflicts, and strove to maintain peace. The careers and characteristics of the consuls elected between 77 and 75 show that the majority of the voting population chose them as they were thought to be able to put an end to the violence of previous years and tackle the issues threatening stability.Pubblicazioni consigliate
