The note aims to provide a critical reading of Western Europe’s Democratic Age. 1945-1968 by Martin Conway. The paper analyses the structure and main contents of Conway’s reconstruction and specifically investigates how the historian employs the categories of «democracy», «postwar» and «memory». Special attention is devoted to the role of Catholic actors in the reconstruction process of Europe after the war and in the longer history of the churches. More generally, the paper aims to frame Conway’s study in the more recent international historiography on post-1945 Europe and to reflect critically on the history of democracy, and its evolution, as a specific element in the history of Western Europe.
