After setting out the political climate of the years 80-79 BC, this paper investigates the electoral campaign for the consulate of 78 BC, by analysing the profiles of the attested and likely candidates, assessing their strengths and weaknesses, and exploring the reasons for their choice or exclusion, and their probable electoral pools. It also investigates the candidates’ self-image and its use for competition, even through the promotion of monuments. Abstract

It shows that the election must have been contested, fought on the basis of personal qualities and popularity, but partly also of different approaches in relation to political issues.
