Discussing in the critical note José Emilio Burucúa’s book (Civilización. Historia de un concepto, 2024), this contribution takes some of its insights for a comprehensive history of political concepts. What comes into question, to “provincialise Europe” (Chakrabar- thy), is a quest to treat political concepts as signifiers with many entrances, to assume the point of view of the heterogeneous (Braudel), to proceed to a spatialization of discursive communities and to treat them as conflictual fields within which hegemonic and coun- terhegemonic processes are produced.
