The hypothesis of Euripides’ Phrixos I is partially preserved by P.Oxy. XXVII 2455 and P.Oxy. LII 3652. In the first part of this paper, I examine the relationship between the two witnesses, arguing that there are not sufficient grounds for establishing the length of the lines of P.Oxy. 3652: thus, this criterium should not be put to use in reconstructing the text of the papyrus, as it has been done so far. The paper’s second half focuses on the lines of the hypothesis concerning Ino’s plot against Phrixos and Helle. I argue that she felt bitterness at not having children by Athamas, and that this was the motive for her murderous intentions. This interpretation is supported by a comparison with other tragic stepmothers, and by a philological analysis of the papyri.
