Abstract The study addresses the topic of the position of the port of Nora, a Phoenician emporium and Punic-Roman city in the island of Sardinia (Italy), through new geo-archaeological investigations. The research focused on the marine area located west of the city, where corings performed on Posidonia oceanica meadows and radiometric dating of the sediments revealed that in ancient times the seabed was shallower than today, with depths ranging from 3 m in the Early 1st millennium BC to 1.5-1 m in the Roman period. These were therefore areas fully suitable for navigation, since it likely was a water basin of about 2-2.5 hectares, bounded on the western limit by an imposing submerged structure, the so-called molo Schmiedt. The research provides new elements to reconstruct the Nora’s port layout, outlining a system divided into two areas: a more inland and sheltered one to the north, and a larger and artificial one to the south, close to the urban center and its commercial structures. Riassunto Lo studio affronta il tema della collocazione del porto di Nora, emporio fenicio e città punico-romana della Sardegna, attraverso indagini geo-archeologiche. La ricerca recentemente si è concentrata sull’area marina posta ad ovest della città, laddove dei sondaggi condotti sui banchi di Posidonia oceanica e le datazioni radiometriche dei sedimenti hanno rivelato che i fondali erano in antico a quote più basse di quelle attuali, con profondità tra i 3 m dell’inizio del I millennio a.C. e i 1,5-1 m di età romana. Si trattava quindi di aree pienamente idonee alla navigazione, entro un bacino delimitato ad ovest da un’imponente struttura sommersa, il c.d. molo Schmiedt, che definiva uno specchio d’acqua di circa 2-2,5 ettari. La ricerca fornisce nuovi elementi per ricostruire l’assetto portuale di Nora, delineando un sistema articolato su due aree: una più interna e riparata a nord, e una più ampia e artificiale a sud, prossima al centro urbano e alle sue strutture commerciali.
