This essay investigates the complex and multifaceted phenomenon of Petrarchan early modern Latin translations. Focusing on translations written by Italian authors between the late fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, it investigates five main case studies (concerning the different translations of Petrarch’s poems 3, 126, 162, 132, and 136) and, while considering them individually, also sets them within the general context of the literary phenomenon to which they belong. The article examines the diverse reasons that brought different authors (including Coluccio Salutati, Cristoforo Landino, Alessandro Braccesi, Nicolò d’Arco, Marcantonio Flaminio, Flaminio Rai, Girolamo Massari, and Girolamo Cicala) to translating single poems of Petrarch’s Canzoniere into Latin. It also focuses on the literary, rhetorical, and poetical choices the translators made in their Latin poems, considering which elements and aspects of the original texts were conveyed and emphasized in the new poetical compositions.

Abstract
It also focuses on the literary, rhetorical, and poetical choices the translators made in their Latin poems, considering which elements and aspects of the original texts were conveyed and emphasized in the new poetical compositions.Pubblicazioni consigliate
