This article presents the case of a system of four strategic networks which offers the companies involved significant competitive advantages. The study focuses on the lead company e Carlo Gavazzi Space, a very successful Italian company that develops space systems and applications at an international level e and the relationships it has established with other firms in its system of networks. The company has put considerable energy into building the networks, and continues to play the role of strategic ‘guide’ for the networks’ partners. The case study analyses how the multiple network system is organized, and how each network contributes to helping CGS obtain the competitive advantages of increased contractual power with public space agencies, increased innovation generation, improved technological transfer opportunities and entry into the small satellites segment. The case study also illustrates how the lead company manages the system of networks, with particular reference to the coordination systems adopted. Particular attention is paid to the leadership of Carlo Gavazzi Space’s CEO as the strategic guide for whole the system. The management practices of the multiple network system are analysed, showing how each network requires different coordination mechanisms and degrees of formalization depending on its specific main objectives.
