This essay discusses the issue of polycentric metropolitan governance within the context of the territorial planning reform in Italy, underscoring the potentially conflictive dynamic with regional government levels, particularly with the metropolitan area of the region of Veneto Central. It is an excellent example of the metropolitan city, defined from the province of Venice and not coinciding with the polycentric metropolitan area that rather covers the area of Veneto Central in the functional sense. Based on the Veneto case, several compared research hypotheses are proposed to evaluate governance of the polycentric metropolitan area.
