The article deals with the issue of narrative strategies of "History" by Elsa Morante, with the aim of pointing out its communicative puropose. First of all, one observes the dialectic relationships with the tradition of novel. Afterwards, a link is individuated with the "Epic" genre (starting with Walter Benjamin's observations in "The Storyteller"). Finally, there is an in-depth examination of stylistic and rethorical techniques (language, narrator's attitude, tenses, use of flashbacks and flashforwards, role of paratexts, etc.). All these aspects support the idea of a novel in order to reach a large number of readers not to 'explain' an ideology but to 'show' an existential reality.
