This paper offers a new paleographical, codicological and textual reassessment of the Lucian manuscript Vaticanus Palatinus graecus 73, a parchment codex written at the end of the 12th century in the so called «ε arrondi» style, originally developed in Cyprus and Palestine. The textual restauration of fol. 2v is here attributed for the first time to the Byzantine polymath Nicephorus Gregoras, thus shedding new light on the early history of the manuscript and on the circulation of Lucian’s text in Byzantium. The Appendix focuses briefly of the Lucian manuscript Parisinus graecus 2957, its history and its scribe.

Abstract

This paper offers a new paleographical, codicological and textual reassessment of the Lucian manuscript Vaticanus Palatinus graecus 73, a parchment codex written at the end of the 12th century in the so called «ε arrondi» style, originally developed in Cyprus and Palestine. The textual restauration of fol. 2v is here attributed for the first time to the Byzantine polymath Nicephorus Gregoras, thus shedding new light on the early history of the manuscript and on the circulation of Lucian’s text in Byzantium.
