This article presents a transliteration from Cyrillic and an editorial adaptation of the first two acts of Constantin Aristia’s Romanian translation of Vittorio Alfieri’s Saul (1837), accompanied by an introductory study. The work is situated within the cultural, theatrical, and linguistic transformations of early nineteenth-century Romania, a period marked by the intense mediation of Western dramatic models. Although largely excluded from the later literary canon, Aristia played a significant role in the formation of modern Romanian theatre. By approaching the translation as a literary text rather than solely as a historical document, the article revisits earlier critical assessments and outlines Aristia’s pragmatic translation strategy, balancing Alfieri’s dramatic diction with the expressive resources of Romanian at a formative stage of its literary development.
