This review discusses Lino Leonardi’s «Filologia romanza. 1. Critica del testo», the first volume of a three-part handbook designed as an introduction to Romance philology for Italian university students. The book is presented as both a pedagogical guide to textual criticism and a theoretically grounded reflection on the specific challenges posed by medieval Romance textuality. Particular attention is given to Leonardi’s conception of the text as a problem and of the critical edition as a scientific, interpretive hypothesis, rooted in the Continian tradition but open to the requirements of readability and methodological transparency.
