This article offers a palaeographical and codicological analysis of the hitherto unidentified printer’s model for the Aldine edition of Gregory of Nazianzus's Carmina (1504): the manuscript Leiden, Scal. 58. The section of the codex examined here is the work of the scribe Francesco Bernardo, who later entered the Benedictine order under the name Lucas; his biography and activity as a copyist and translator are discussed in detail. The article also provides a description of the first codicological unit of the Leiden manuscript, copied by the monk Hilarion Veronensis.
